Tarot card reading is a form of cartomancy, fortune telling or divination using a deck of cards, whereby the practitioner uses tarot cards to gain insight into the past, present, or future. They formulate a question, draw cards from the deck, and interpret them.

A standard deck is divided into two main parts:
Major Arcana (22 cards): These represent “Big Life Lessons” and major themes (like The Fool, The Lovers, or The World).
Minor Arcana (56 cards): These deal with daily life and are split into four suits: Wands (energy/passion), Cups (emotions), Swords (thoughts/conflict), and Pentacles (money/health)
The history of Tarot began in 15th-century Italy as a card game known as Tarocchini. For centuries, these cards were used purely for entertainment until the late 1700s, when French occultists popularized the belief that the cards held ancient Egyptian secrets and mystical powers. This shift transformed Tarot from a parlor game into a tool for divination and spiritual insight. In 1909, the publication of the Rider-Waite-Smith deck revolutionized Tarot by adding rich, symbolic illustrations to every card, making it the standard for modern readers. Today, Tarot is widely used globally not just for “fortune-telling,” but as a powerful bridge for psychology, self-reflection, and intuition.
